When
Baden-Württemberg is an all year round holiday destination. During the winter there are some of the best ski areas in Germany. In summer it offers extensive hiking, biking, swimming and other sports activities.
How
Take the plane
There are many direct flights from the UK to Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Friedrichshafen near Lake Constance.
From the airport
The airports are well served by public transport, taxis and rental car offices.
Take the train
With the Eurostar and the ICE (Inter City Express – the fastest train in Germany) you can travel from London to Stuttgart in approx. 8 hours.
Do
• Lake Constance –offers plenty of swimming and water activities. From March to August you can enjoy a ride in a Zeppelin
• Stuttgart, the home of Porsche and Mercedes Benz, has several interesting museums, including the car manufacturers’ museums, the Carl-Zeiss Planetarium and Germany’s only zoological-botanical garden Wilhelma.
• The aquarium Sea Life in Constance
• The Family Park Villingen-Schwenningen offers merry-go-rounds, large play grounds, a petting zoo, an historic fairground and puppet shows.
• Europapark in Rust is Germany’s largest theme park with luxurious Mediterranean themed Resort Hotels.
• Summer toboggan-run in Enzklösterle – the longest and fastest high-grade steel toboggan run in Germany.
Eat
The “Maultaschen”, which look like oversized raviolis, are the most famous speciality of the region. Another culinary treat is home made noodles called “Spätzle”. And, of course, The Black Forest gave the world famous Black Forest Gateau its name.
Cost
Baden-Württemberg offers good value for money. It’s always a good idea to avoid travel during the German school summer holidays, because prices are much higher during this period.
